An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead by unknown gunmen during a wedding function in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, on Wednesday, police said. The incident took place nearly a month after another sarpanch and AAP leader, Jharmal Singh of Valtoha village in Amritsar district, was shot dead at a wedding.
In the latest case, Harpinder Singh, sarpanch of Thathian Mehta village, had gone to attend a marriage at a palace when three armed men fired at him from close range.
Locals said Harpinder Singh was an active member of the AAP government and a close aide of Punjab Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.
According to police, the attackers used an AK-47 rifle in the assault, and two empty cartridges were seized from the crime scene. Singh died on the spot. His cousin was seriously hurt while trying to chase the assailants and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The incident occurred even as the Punjab government is carrying out the second phase of its anti-gangster campaign, “Gangsteran Te Vaar”. Police said special teams have been constituted to trace and arrest the accused, who are currently absconding.
