The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti on Saturday held protests and burnt an effigy of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha outside Lok Bhawan in Jammu.
The protests are being held against the Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College over the recent admissions row.
Angry protesters carried Vaishno Devi flags and raised slogans of “Go back, LG, go back” to press their demand for the revocation of admissions to the medical college.
Protesters also raised objections to the medical college being located in Katra, which they argued that it should be relocated to some other location, saying that having a college near the shrine is an unacceptable decision.
The protesters clashed with riot control police as officers attempted to disperse the crowd.
Last month, the National Medical Commission (NMC) rejected a proposal from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, Katra, seeking to place 100 per cent of its MBBS seats under the All India Quota (AIQ) to be filled through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), following the row over MBBS admissions.
An NMC official said the move was rejected as it contradicted the Commission’s policies and was therefore disposed of. “The existing regulations prohibit such moves. We cannot deviate for one organisation in isolation or randomly,” the official said.
He added that any procedures, rules or amendments to regulations must be uniformly applicable across all states and Union territories across the country.
“We have to draw a criterion, and this criterion must be acceptable to the state as well as to other states,” the official said.
