Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday said any fight for the restoration of statehood and other constitutional guarantees must be based on “consistency and credibility” and not on “theatrics or optics”.
Speaking to reporters, Ruhullah stressed that the credibility of the political leadership was at stake as people were seeking concrete results. “The primary condition should be sustainability and consistency. If there is no consistency, there will only be theatrics,” he said.
Ruhullah was notably absent from Wednesday’s meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, during which the National Conference decided to move to New Delhi to press for the restoration of statehood. He criticised such exercises, saying, “Don’t try to fool people by changing venues for meetings. Prepare a roadmap and reach out to the people of Kashmir to build a movement around it.”
The MP called for building sustained pressure on the Prime Minister’s Office, both inside and outside Parliament. Citing the example of Ladakh, he urged Kashmir’s political leadership to learn how to fight unitedly for their rights.
“If everyone is sincere, all political parties should set aside their political identities and come together on a single platform. We must build a democratic and peaceful movement until we regain our rights that were taken away in 2019,” he added.
