The Opposition AIADMK on Friday released its second list of candidates for the April 23 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, announcing nominees for 127 constituencies and retaining several sitting MLAs and senior leaders.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami unveiled the list, which includes a mix of former ministers and experienced party functionaries. Among the key constituencies is Tirunelveli, where the party has fielded senior leader Thanjai N Ganesaraja.
The Tirunelveli seat had been won in the 2021 elections by Nainar Nagendran, the current state president of the BJP. Earlier in the day, Nagendran had announced that he would contest from the Sattur constituency in Virudhunagar district in the upcoming polls.
The AIADMK has also renominated several prominent faces. Former state minister B.V. Ramana will contest from Tiruvallur, while ex-minister and sitting MLA Pollachi V. Jayaraman has been fielded again from Pollachi. Sitting legislator Maragadam Kumaravel has also been renominated from Maduranthakam.
With this announcement, the AIADMK has now declared candidates for 150 constituencies, having earlier released its first list covering 23 seats, which included Palaniswami himself. The party, which is leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state, is contesting a total of 169 seats.
Other constituents of the NDA in Tamil Nadu include the BJP, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).
Polling for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 23.
