The first Air India Express (AI Express) flight from Surat in Gujarat to Bangkok, Thailand, created a buzz not just for its successful launch but also for liquor sales onboard. Some passengers claimed that the stock ran out, sparking a conversation on social media.
The four-hour flight on Friday, operated with a Boeing 737-8 aircraft, carried 175 passengers and six crew members. The plane’s capacity is 176 seats.
Since Gujarat prohibits liquor consumption, the availability of alcohol on the AI Express Gujarat-Thailand flight became a notable aspect. However, airline officials clarified on Sunday that while there were strong liquor sales, the stock was not exhausted as alleged.
Passengers shared their experiences on social media, suggesting that the airline ran out of liquor mid-flight. Officials refuted these claims, assuring there was enough liquor and food onboard for the journey.
Air India Express, owned by the Tata Group, has not released an official statement. However, sources said the airline generally limits each passenger to 100 ml of liquor during a flight.
The airline offers five types of alcoholic beverages onboard. A 50 ml serving of Chivas Regal costs Rs 600, while 50 ml of Red Label, Bacardi White Rum, and Beefeater Gin, as well as 330 ml of Bira Lager, are priced at Rs 400 each.
Regarding food, passengers can either pre-book their meals or purchase them during the flight.
The AI Express Surat-Thailand flight marks an important milestone for the budget airline, offering a direct international route connecting Gujarat to Southeast Asia.
