Amid bad weather and intense rainfall across the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir, authorities on Sunday decided to suspend the ongoing Amarnath Yatra until conditions improve at both base camps in the Valley. The Yatra has been suspended from July 19 as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of the Yatris.
Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Anshul Garg said, “In view of the prevailing weather and inclement forecast over the next few days and considering the safety and well-being of the Yatris, the Amarnath Yatra shall remain suspended from the Pahalgam and Baltal routes from July 19.”
“No movement of any Yatris will be allowed to proceed further from the Baltal and Nunwan Chandanwari base camps from Sunday,” he said.
“The future updates regarding the Yatra shall be issued in due course of time after ensuring route safety and a comprehensive assessment of the weather conditions,” Garg added.
It is important to note that in a separate incident in Kishtwar district during the Machail Mata annual Yatra, 64 pilgrims were killed and hundreds were injured after a cloudburst swept through a community kitchen.
So far, over 3.7 lakh Yatris have paid obeisance at the Amarnath Cave shrine during the ongoing pilgrimage.
