The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) on Friday sealed a mosque at 4th Furlong in Shillong, alleging that the structure was built without the required approvals and valid land-related documents. The action was carried out by members of the KSU’s Shillong Mihngi Circle under the supervision of the organisation’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) organising secretary, Cleenstar Shabong. The drive coincided with the observance of the 191st death anniversary of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem.
In a statement, the student organisation claimed that the mosque was constructed on land allegedly owned by Nurul Choudhary, whom it described as a non-local resident. The KSU said its members were unable to verify documents authorising the construction during their inspection.
“We have sealed the mosque, and it will remain closed until the relevant permissions and land documents are produced and the legality of the construction is established,” the organisation said.
The KSU further stated that it would continue monitoring alleged unauthorised constructions across Shillong and would take up cases where it suspects violations of land ownership rules or building regulations.
The incident comes amid the organisation’s broader campaign focusing on land rights, alleged illegal settlements, and enforcement of laws related to the protection of indigenous communities in Meghalaya.
Founded in 1978, the KSU is among Meghalaya’s most influential student organisations and has consistently raised issues related to tribal identity, land protection, employment opportunities and the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the state.
Over the years, the organisation has been involved in several campaigns, including protests against alleged illegal immigration, opposition to railway expansion projects, eviction drives and inspections of establishments suspected of operating without proper documentation.
While the KSU’s actions have drawn criticism from some sections of civil society, the organisation has maintained that its initiatives are aimed at protecting the rights and interests of Meghalaya’s indigenous population.
