Amritsar’s Commissionerate Police have broken up an organised drug trafficking ring, picking up two men found in possession of more than 4kg of heroin.

The pair, named by authorities as Atish Suman and Sawinder Singh, were caught with exactly 4.13kg of the drug. According to Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, the arrests have dealt a serious blow to the illegal networks currently operating across the border region.

Early signs from the investigation point towards the suspects being in direct contact with smugglers in Pakistan, using social media apps to coordinate their moves. It appears they were picking up heroin shipments from pre-arranged spots on the instructions of their handlers across the border, before moving the gear on to various local buyers.

The police have registered a case under the NDPS Act at Sultanwind police station. Officers are now focused on tracing the rest of the supply chain to figure out exactly who else was involved in this particular cell.
