The Punjab government is planning to declare Anandpur Sahib as the state’s 24th district. This move is being considered to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The region has immense religious significance, and local residents have long demanded district status for it.
Currently, Anandpur Sahib is spread across the assembly constituencies of Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar (Ropar) districts. Residents, religious bodies, and public representatives have consistently urged the government to create a separate district.
Officials say the proposal also makes sense from an administrative and regional development perspective. A high-level panel set up by the government has assessed the feasibility of creating new districts. The estimated cost of forming Anandpur Sahib district is around Rs 560 crore. This includes infrastructure, administrative buildings, and staff appointments.
It is expected that one or two assembly constituencies from Hoshiarpur may be included in the new district. Discussions are also ongoing to make Anandpur Sahib and Nangal the main centers of administration.
Three days ago, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated the “Heritage Street” project in Sri Anandpur Sahib, Rupnagar district. This is the first such initiative in 50 years and aims to promote the historic city as a global center for culture and tourism.
