K Annamalai has launched a new movement that will eventually become a political party for the next Tamil Nadu elections. The former BJP chief in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai said goodbye to "cult politics." He wants everyday people to have a bigger say in the state's affairs with his Annamalai Makkal Iyakkam (AMI) initiative.

In a video message, the leader also known as 'Singham,' said he would start a political movement and get ready for the next election. He shared some core ideas too. Singham claimed politics is not just for one family. His group wants to shake up things by ending the idea of lifelong leaders, MPs, and MLAs. Widely credited with expanding the BJP's footprint in Tamil Nadu, he reiterated the need to replace cult worship with genuine grassroots governance.

Annamalai, who served as an IPS officer in Karnataka before quitting the service in 2019, initially ran an organisation called the 'We The Leaders Foundation'. He joined the BJP in 2020 and became state president a year later. His appointment is expected to bring in lots of new helpers for his initiatives. Also, he ran aggressive campaigns against the MK Stalin-led DMK government and went on long walking tours across the region. Owing to this, the party got way more attention in an area where they usually struggle.

The BJP's decision to join forces with the AIADMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu polls reportedly offended Annamalai. He wanted the BJP to run independently. After urgent meetings in Delhi with Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari, Annamalai, decided to resign. In his letter, he said he fundamentally disagreed with the party's plan in Tamil Nadu.

He did not hold back on sharing his dislike in his video. He made it clear that he wanted the BJP to run alone in the election, not contest with others. He'd even talked about this with JP Nadda. Plus, he pointed out that he never gave up his Tamil roots, even after spending six years with the BJP.

Stressing that his departure was not a hasty decision, Annamalai explained that he had first informed the BJP leadership of his intention to exit on December 4, 2025, but agreed to stay back to complete pending election work. As a member of the Gounder community, he talked extensively about the next stage of his public and political life. He stressed the urgent need for young people to get into politics and encouraged them to sign up on his foundation’s website.

He assured that his movement isn't in direct competition to anyone. While doing so, he urged his followers to stay patient; he planned to transform the movement into a political party when the time is right. He has envisioned a new style of politics for Tamil Nadu that could deliver real change, while explicitly stating that his movement would not revolve around a single individual. He concluded by saying that their motto is to bring in a positive path dedicated to common-man politics.

The timing of Annamalai's departure is highly significant. Vijay's TVK party is on the rise in Tamil Nadu, showing there's room for new players beyond the DMK and AIADMK. This shift probably gave Annamalai the courage to go independent. It will be interesting to see if this leads to a clash between 'Thalapathy' and 'Singham' in future elections.
