Security forces on Friday recovered the bodies of two porters working with the Indian Army who had slipped and fallen to their deaths into a nallah in the upper reaches of the Gulmarg area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The deceased porters were identified as Layakat Ahmad Deedar (27), son of Ghulam Mohammad Deedar of Masjid Aagan, Chandoosa, and Ishfaq Ahmad Khatana (33), son of Jamal-ud-Din Khatana of Pachar, Chandoosa, in Baramulla district.
Officials confirmed that the incident occurred late on Thursday when the porters were moving towards Anita Post, a forward area that remains cut off due to heavy snowfall.
The porters lost their footing on a slippery stretch and fell into the nallah.
Army personnel and local rescue teams launched a search operation despite challenging weather conditions and treacherous terrain. After sustained overnight efforts, the bodies were retrieved on Friday.
The families of the deceased also confirmed that the bodies had been recovered following the overnight operation, officials said. In a separate incident, an Army jawan died after slipping from a height during patrolling in the same district, officials said on Friday.
Subedar Hira Lal, a resident of the Akbarpur area of Haryana, slipped during night patrolling in the Fatehgarh Sheeri area of the north Kashmir district, the officials said.
The jawan was quickly rushed to the Government Medical College in Baramulla in an unconscious state, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
