Assam witnessed a flurry of political activity on Thursday as leaders of the BJP and Congress arrived in the state ahead of the assembly elections.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin, on the second day of his visit, toured a tea garden in Dibrugarh district, praising the labourers for their role in giving Assam tea global recognition. Accompanied by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP Assam unit president Dilip Saikia, and state Culture Minister Bimal Borah, Nabin lauded the workers’ dedication and commitment.

“The tea gardens of Assam have earned global acclaim for their boundless natural beauty, and Assam tea has gained international recognition for its exquisite flavour and superior quality,” Nabin said on X. He noted that the tireless labour of tea workers has consistently brought pride to the state.

Earlier, Nabin had breakfast at Sonowal’s residence in Dibrugarh with senior party leaders. He then visited the Barekuri ‘Naamghar’ in Tinsukia district, calling it a spiritual centre reflecting the faith and cultural unity of the Moran community.

Nabin prayed for peace, prosperity, and the continued progress of India, noting that the rare Hoolock Gibbons, locally known as “Holo Bandar,” coexist in the village alongside residents. He also paid floral tributes at the ‘Moidam’ of Matak ruler Sarbananda Singha.

The BJP president is scheduled to address party workers at a booth in Manohari Tea Garden before concluding his visit.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Guwahati for a two-day visit to finalise the party’s candidate list for the 126-member Assam Assembly elections, expected in March-April. Vadra, chairperson of the party’s screening committee, was received by state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and senior leaders.

She visited the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hills for prayers and is slated to meet the party’s Political Affairs Committee, MLAs, MPs, and district presidents. Vadra will also unveil a ‘charge sheet’ against the state BJP government later on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to arrive in Silchar on Thursday night for a three-day visit. Shah will inspect the BSF’s Natunpur border outpost along the India-Bangladesh border, launch the Vibrant Villages Programme, and address a BJP rally in the Barak Valley to kick off the party’s election campaign.

He will also attend the CRPF’s annual day parade in Guwahati on Saturday and lay the foundation stone for the 10th Assam Police Battalion campus in Kasutoli. This marks Shah’s third visit to Assam since December 29 as the BJP seeks a third consecutive term.
