The Assam Cabinet has approved a proposal to approach the Gauhati High Court for the constitution of a dedicated fast-track court to conduct day-to-day hearings in the case related to the demise of singer Zubeen Garg.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, amid growing public attention and the family’s demand for a speedy trial.
Addressing mediapersons after the meeting, Sarma said the state government would formally write to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court seeking the constitution of an exclusive sessions court under Section 346(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for conducting daily hearings.
“The Cabinet approved the formation of a dedicated court for day-to-day trial of the case. We will place a request before the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Thereafter, the Chief Justice will take a decision regarding the constitution of the court and the proceedings,” he said.

The Chief Minister asserted that the government remained committed to ensuring a transparent and time-bound judicial process in view of the sensitivity attached to the matter.
“This case carries emotional and social significance. The family members of Zubeen Garg seek a fast-track trial. Respecting their demand, the Cabinet decided to move forward with this proposal,” he said.
Sarma noted that the government had earlier considered allowing the trial to continue before the existing court to ensure continuity, particularly since none of the accused has secured bail so far. However, in view of the family’s request for an expedited mechanism, the Cabinet resolved to seek a separate court.
“We felt that continuing before the present court could ensure continuity. But since the family asks for a fast-track mechanism, we accept their request in the larger interest of justice,” he said.
According to the proposal, the Gauhati High Court will appoint a judge and frame necessary guidelines for the functioning of the dedicated court. The state government will extend logistical and infrastructural support required for the smooth conduct of the proceedings.
