\The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has constituted seven special teams to monitor arrangements and ensure transparency during the counting of votes for the Assembly elections scheduled on May 4.

The move, aimed at preventing irregularities and overseeing security measures, follows consultations between AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, the party said in a statement.

Party sources said the teams will begin visits across districts from April 25. During these visits, members will inspect strongrooms where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored, interact with party candidates and review security arrangements with district administrations.

As per the Election Commission of India, the Assembly polls held on April 9 recorded a voter turnout of 85.96 per cent, with participation from nearly 2.5 crore voters in Assam.

For Upper Assam, the team will be led by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia along with Raju Sahu, Utpal Gogoi, Rajkumar Nilanetra Neog, David Phukan and Mrityunjay Duwarah. The group will cover Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts.

In the North Bank region, responsibilities have been assigned to former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora and a team of party functionaries, who will visit districts in the belt to assess preparedness.

A separate team will oversee Central Assam and hill districts, including Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan and Nalbari, as well as Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.

For Lower Assam, Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain will lead a team tasked with visiting Barpeta, Bongaigaon, South Salmara-Mankachar, Dhubri, Goalpara and Bajali.

In Barak Valley, another group has been assigned to monitor Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, while a separate team will cover the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The party said the teams will closely coordinate with local units to flag any discrepancies and ensure that counting is conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

The exercise comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the declaration of results, with parties stepping up vigilance over the handling of EVMs and counting-day arrangements.

Counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections is scheduled for May 4.
