The flood situation in Assam deteriorated further on Sunday, with five additional deaths reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total toll to 10, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. The latest casualties include four people, among them two children, in Jorhat district, and one person in Karbi Anglong. Authorities also confirmed that two individuals, including a child, remain missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Charaideo and Karbi Anglong districts.
The deluge has affected a total of 3,62,933 people across 16 districts. Among the worst-hit areas, Sivasagar tops the list with 1,57,727 affected residents, followed by Charaideo with 1,04,475 and Jorhat with 50,987.
According to official data, 794 villages under 45 revenue circles remain inundated, while floodwaters have submerged 19,099.59 hectares of agricultural land. The impact on livestock has also been severe, with nearly 3.89 lakh animals affected.
Several major rivers continue to flow above danger levels. The Brahmaputra River is above the danger mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district. Other rivers, including the Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Disang at Nanglamuraghat, and Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh, are also flowing above danger levels. Meanwhile, the Dikhou River in Sivasagar has crossed its highest flood level mark, raising further concerns.
In response, district administrations have set up 101 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering nearly 45,000 displaced people. Large-scale rescue operations are underway, with teams from the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), paramilitary forces, Fire and Emergency Services, and Civil Defence evacuating close to 7,000 people on Sunday alone.
The floods have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, with 29 roads affected and six embankments breached in the last 24 hours.
Following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, several Cabinet ministers have visited flood-affected areas to assess the situation and oversee ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
