More than 15.43 lakh people are registered as active job seekers in Assam, with over 3.55 lakh fresh registrations recorded in the first half of 2026, the state government informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Replying to a starred question by MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Prasanta Phukan said the Directorate of Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship had 15,43,350 active job seekers on its rolls as of June 30, 2026.
The minister said the department has maintained annual employment registration data over the years. He noted that 15,82,987 job seekers were registered as of March 31, 2016, providing a benchmark for tracking employment trends in the state.
Assembly data showed significant fluctuations in registrations over recent years. In 2022, the department recorded 11,53,971 active job seekers, while 10,34,613 fresh applications were processed during the year.
The number rose sharply in 2023, when the employment register reached 20,10,517, including 8,56,546 new registrations. In 2024, active registrations increased further to 21,16,561, with 1,06,044 fresh additions.

The figure declined to 11,88,160 in 2025, when 2,49,765 people registered with the department. However, registrations climbed again in 2026, with 3,55,741 new job seekers added by the end of June, taking the active count to 15,43,350.
The government also informed the House that 12,52,731 registrations had expired or become inactive as of June 30, 2026, reflecting periodic renewals and the removal of outdated records from the employment database.
Providing a breakdown by educational qualification, Phukan said graduates constitute the largest category of registered job seekers, numbering 6,48,899. They are followed by 1,16,159 postgraduates, indicating that a substantial number of highly educated candidates are seeking employment opportunities.
The employment register also includes 62,581 technical diploma holders and 65,989 technical graduates, underscoring the presence of a sizeable pool of professionally qualified and skilled candidates awaiting jobs in the state.
The figures were shared in response to Assembly queries seeking year-wise employment registration data and details of the educational qualifications of individuals enrolled with the Directorate of Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship.
