The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, even as incessant rain continued to wreak havoc in parts of the Northeast, particularly Tripura, where hundreds of houses have been damaged and thousands displaced.

The weather office also placed Bihar, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and West Uttar Pradesh under the orange alert, warning of intense rainfall during the day.

Heavy rainfall has also been forecast over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, besides several other states, including Gangetic West Bengal, Coastal Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.

In Tripura, heavy rain over the past 24 hours damaged nearly 300 houses and forced 3,161 people to take shelter in 31 relief camps, according to official reports.

The worst-hit district was Dhalai, where Longtharai Valley alone reported damage to 267 houses, while additional losses were reported from Ambassa and Gandacherra subdivisions.

Authorities said the Khowai, Manu, Deo and Juri rivers were flowing above the expected flood level, inundating low-lying areas and forcing hundreds of families to evacuate.

The state government has opened relief camps in Dhalai, Khowai and Unakoti districts, providing food, drinking water, milk for children and medical assistance to displaced residents. Health teams have also been deployed to conduct health check-ups in the camps.

The IMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods, waterlogging and landslides, particularly in the hilly states of the Northeast and the Himalayan region, and urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall lashed parts of Delhi on Thursday morning, bringing relief from humid conditions. The IMD has forecast a cloudy sky with light to moderate rain at isolated places in the national capital during the day.
