A tragic accident snuffed lives of at least nine people after a private bus carrying 35 tourists rammed into an obstacle in the Papikonda National Park in Alluri Sitaramarajud district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours of Friday.
While three survived with severe injuries, the other surviving tourists are also being tended to by doctors, police said, adding that all belonged to Chittoor district.
Police said the bus, which was headed to neighbouring Telangana from Chittoor, was carrying 37 people, including the driver and the cleaner, when poor visibility due to heavy fog led to the accident.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Bardar said the accident occurred around 4.30 am on Chintoor-Maredumilli ghat road near a Durga temple.

“At least nine people died and 22 were injured as the bus fell off the ghat road. The bus did not fully plunge into the valley. It turned turtle... and got stuck,” Bardar said, adding that four of the injured are critical.
Bardar said the bus passengers were going to the Sri Rama temple in Telangana’s Bhadrachalam from Chittoor.
President Droupadi Murmu condoled the loss of lives in the bus accident in a post shared on X, and said she also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.
“Pained to know about the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Alluri Sitharama Raju District of Andhra Pradesh. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for quick recovery of those injured,” the President wrote.
