Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday submitted his report on the party's internal differences to AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal. He said any decision on the state leadership would be made only after careful discussion and would not be taken lightly.
Baghel said he prepared the report after completing a six-day consultation with Congress leaders across Punjab. He met Venugopal at his residence to hand over the findings.
Speaking to reporters, Baghel said he held meetings at the Punjab Congress office and also spoke to several leaders individually before finalising the report.
Amid ongoing speculation over a possible leadership change, Baghel clarified that Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has not resigned.
He also ruled out any immediate decision by the party. Referring to the leadership issue, Baghel said it was not "a game of puppets or dolls" and stressed that the Congress leadership would study the feedback before making any decision.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa also reached Venugopal's residence as the party continued discussions over the situation in the Punjab unit.
The meeting came a day after Rahul Gandhi held talks with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Venugopal to review the infighting in the Punjab Congress and discuss the next course of action.
Baghel's report follows his visit to Punjab on July 11, when he met party leaders to gather their views on the organisational situation and the state leadership.
According to party sources, several of the 92 leaders who met Baghel, including MLAs and former legislators, said they had no personal issues with Raja Warring. However, many expressed doubts about his ability to lead the Congress to victory in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The consultations were attended by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Partap Singh Bajwa, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Aruna Chaudhary, OP Soni, Pargat Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
The Congress high command is likely to review Baghel's report before taking a final decision on organisational matters in Punjab, where internal differences have grown ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
