To enhance safety of residents living along the Beas river, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has set up an early warning system (EWS) that will issue timely alerts when excess water is released from the Pong Dam, officials said on Monday. The system was inaugurated virtually by BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi.

Under the project, six early warning system units have been set up along a nearly 50-km stretch between the 52 Gate Barrage and Mirthal. The system covers important locations including Pekhan, Sansarpur Terrace, the right side of Shah Barrage, Riali (Fatehpur), Bela Sariyana (Mukerian), Parol (Indora), and an area near Arni University in Indora, officials said.

Officials stated that the warning systems have been installed near populated areas so that alerts can reach residents quickly, allowing them enough time to move away from the riverbed during emergencies.

Tripathi said earlier, warning people required teams to visit villages physically and use public address systems during emergency water releases from the Pong Dam, which often caused delays.

“With this system in place, alerts will now be sent instantly, helping reduce the chances of accidents,” he said, adding that the initiative has been taken in public interest.

Chief Engineer of Beas Dam, Rakesh Gupta, said the EWS units have been strategically installed to cover vulnerable stretches of the river and to improve response time during emergency situations.
