After a 12-day suspension following Operation Sindoor, the iconic Beating Retreat ceremony is set to resume tomorrow at the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar, Punjab, as well as at the Hussainiwala border in Ferozepur, according to reports. The ceremony had been halted amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
However, the Indian authorities have decided to scale down the event by keeping the gates closed and foregoing the traditional handshake between the border forces.
The Beating Retreat ceremony is a symbolic and highly anticipated daily military event that showcases the camaraderie and discipline of the Indian and Pakistani border security forces. The recent suspension was a reflection of strained bilateral relations following the military strikes carried out under Operation Sindoor.
Barbed Wire Gates to Open for Farmers
In a positive development, the barbed wire gates at the border, which had been closed due to the tensions, will be reopened starting tomorrow to allow farmers access to their fields. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, a minister in the Punjab government, visited the Ajnala border outpost in Shahpur on Monday to meet Border Security Force (BSF) officers and jawans stationed there during the tense period.
During his visit, Dhaliwal expressed gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the state government to the security personnel by distributing sweets and fruit baskets. “We are proud of our jawans, and whenever they need our support, the Punjab government and farmers will always stand with them,” he said.
Dhaliwal also discussed the challenges faced by farmers cultivating lands located on the other side of the barbed wire fence with BSF officers. Addressing these concerns, he announced that the gates would be opened from tomorrow onwards, allowing farmers to access their fields without restrictions.
“This will enable farmers to resume their normal agricultural activities,” Dhaliwal stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the farming community during this period.
The resumption of the Beating Retreat ceremony and the reopening of the gates mark a cautious step towards easing tensions at the border and restoring normalcy for border communities.
