Bengal politics on edge as TMC faces two-thirds split

If submitted, the move could trigger a constitutional and political crisis within the party, potentially weakening the traditional power centres at Mamata’s Kalighat residence and Abhishek’s Camac Street office.

The TMC leadership has moved swiftly to contain the crisis. Following a poor show of just 19 MLAs at a recent meeting convened at the former Chief Minister’s residence.

An atmosphere of palpable tension has gripped the West Bengal Assembly precincts since Wednesday morning, as an unprecedented internal rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears poised to take an official turn. According to political sources, a dissident faction within the party is likely to submit a formal letter to the Assembly Speaker today, bearing the signatures of more than two-thirds of TMC’s MLAs. The letter reportedly seeks the election of a new legislative party leader, effectively challenging the authority of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, widely regarded as the preferred nominee of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and party’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

If submitted, the move could trigger a constitutional and political crisis within the party, potentially weakening the traditional power centres at Mamata’s Kalighat residence and Abhishek’s Camac Street office. However, even as the decisive moment approaches, hesitation continues to simmer within the rebel camp, while the party leadership has intensified efforts to mount a counter-strategy.

To bypass disqualification under the Anti-Defection Law, the dissidents required the support of at least two-thirds of the party’s 80 MLAs— amounting to 53 legislators. Sources indicate that the faction has not only crossed this threshold but has secured the backing of 58 MLAs.

The rebellion is reportedly being spearheaded by Ritabrata Banerjee, MLA from Uluberia East, with Entally MLA Sandipan Saha acting as the chief coordinator. Despite the numerical strength, internal discord persists within the group. Veteran leaders, including Arup Roy, are said to be grappling with the prospect of aligning under Ritabrata, a former CPI(M) leader, raising concerns about ideological and political continuity.

At the same time, a sense of urgency pervades the dissident ranks. Several MLAs fear that failure to act decisively at this juncture could expose them to significant political risks in the future. A crucial meeting of the rebels is scheduled for later today to iron out differences and finalise their course of action.

Meanwhile, the TMC leadership has moved swiftly to contain the crisis. Following a poor show of just 19 MLAs at a recent meeting convened at the former Chief Minister’s residence, both Mamata and Abhishek have reportedly entered damage-control mode. Political insiders suggest that Kalighat has initiated direct communication with top authorities in New Delhi, with reports of a message being conveyed to the Prime Minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg.

The dissident MLAs have made it clear that their primary objective is to challenge the leadership imposed upon them. Under parliamentary conventions, the Leader of the Opposition is not directly appointed but is chosen by the elected legislators of the party.

The letter to the Speaker is said to explicitly endorse Ritabrata as the new leader of the Trinamool Legislature Party. Observers believe that if the Speaker accepts this claim, it could effectively nullify the control of Mamata and Abhishek over the party’s legislative wing. The political battle may not end within the Assembly. Speculation is rife that the dissident faction could approach the Election Commission of India to stake claim as the ‘real’ TMC. The question of who will retain the party’s iconic ‘grass-flower’ symbol now looms large.
