A horrific case of workplace brutality has emerged from Mumbai’s Malad area, where a Bengali-speaking migrant worker was allegedly mutilated after complaining to the police about unpaid wages. The victim, Rahul Singh, a resident of Nalhati municipality in Birbhum district, lost both ears in the attack.

Rahul had been working for a contractor company in Malad for the past six months. While his wages were initially paid on time, he claims that for the last two months he had received nothing, despite continuing to work. According to him, the contractor—identified as Nehar, referred to locally as ‘Sheth’—repeatedly delayed payment on various pretexts and even threatened him.

When his dues of RS 20,000 remained unpaid, Rahul filed a complaint at the local police station. Soon after, he alleges, four to five men sent by ‘Sheth’ attacked him as punishment. “They beat me and cut off one ear completely and almost half of the other, using a blade,” Rahul said. He managed to escape and was admitted to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to fix his ears.

Fearing for his life, Rahul fled Mumbai after being discharged and returned to his home in Nalhati on Monday. “I left behind my bag containing my Aadhaar and voter cards. They had already taken my mobile phone,” he alleged.

Rahul’s father, Ram Balak Singh, said the family’s poor financial condition had forced his son to work outside the state. “I never imagined he would be tortured like this,” he said. His mother, Deepa Singh, added tearfully, “Five or six boys did this to my son. I have no money. I don’t know what to do.”

The family has demanded immediate intervention by the authorities. TMC MLA from Nalhati, Rajendra Prasad Singh, visited Rahul’s home on Wednesday, calling the incident 'unacceptable.' He said, “Atrocities against Bengalis are continuing across the country. Cutting off a worker’s ears over such a dispute is beyond inhuman. Arrangements are being made for his treatment. If the family wishes, we will approach the police.” The incident has sparked outrage locally and renewed concerns over the safety of Bengali migrant workers in other states.
