RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat reached Imphal on Thursday for a three-day visit to Manipur, marking his first trip to the state since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. His arrival comes at a time when the state continues to grapple with the fallout of the prolonged conflict between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
Bhagwat was received at Imphal airport by senior functionaries of the organisation, who said his visit forms part of the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. A state functionary said Bhagwat will spend the next three days holding closed-door interactions with RSS members to review the organisation’s activities in Manipur.
The RSS chief is also scheduled to meet entrepreneurs, tribal leaders from the hill districts, prominent citizens and representatives of youth organisations.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, remains in suspended animation.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced in the ethnic clashes that broke out in 2023, leaving large parts of the state divided along community lines.
