Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Saturday recovered two mobile phones concealed in a parcel intended for an inmate at District Jail Bhaderwah, officials said.
The phones were discovered during a routine checking of parcels delivered to the jail. The parcel was addressed to an inmate detained under the Public Safety Act, who has been under observation in the jail for the past month.
Officials identified the inmate as a resident of Hajin in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Initial inquiry revealed that the parcel containing the two mobile phones was booked from Pulwama district in south Kashmir. Following the recovery, jail authorities seized the devices and immediately informed the police.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections, and further investigation is underway to identify those behind the smuggling attempt. Smuggling or possessing mobile phones inside jails in India is treated as a serious security violation.
Offenders can face punishment under the Prisons Act, 1894 or the proposed Model Prisons Act, 2023, including imprisonment of up to one to three years—depending on the assessed security risk—along with fines ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 in certain cases.
