Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu on Wednesday visited the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantt (JRC) Railway Station to review preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit on July 17. He inspected the station along with senior officials of the Ferozepur Division.
During the visit, Bittu thanked Prime Minister Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for redeveloping the station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He said the project has given Punjab a modern railway station while preserving its heritage.
In a post on X, he shared "Reviewed the preparations at Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station today for the proposed visit of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji. Along with senior officers of the Ferozepur Division, we reviewed and finalised every aspect of the arrangements. Directed the Railway officials to leave no stone unturned in ensuring flawless preparations and the highest standards of safety, security and passenger convenience for this important visit."
The 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station has been redeveloped at a cost of around Rs 125 crore. While retaining its historic character, the station has been upgraded with modern passenger facilities inspired by Punjab's cultural heritage.
The station now has a spacious double-height air concourse, steel roofing over the platforms, slip-resistant flooring, LED lighting, entry points from both sides of the city and two new foot overbridges measuring six metres and nine metres in width.
Other facilities include a 40-metre-wide roof covering around 200 metres of the platforms, a 1,770-square metre air concourse, a newly built station building at the second entry and a 4,855-square metre parking area.
In another post on X, Bittu said the station's redevelopment marks an important milestone for Punjab's railway infrastructure. He said the upgraded station reflects the vision of a modern, passenger-friendly railway system and that Prime Minister Modi will dedicate it to the public later this month.
Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station handles nearly 7,500 passengers every day. A total of 66 Up and 66 Down trains stop at the station, including two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, one Humsafar Express, one Garib Rath Express, besides several Mail, Express and Passenger trains. The station caters only to passenger services and does not handle goods traffic.
Highlighting the new facilities, Bittu said the station's large steel-structured roof and air concourse will provide passengers with better connectivity and protection from the weather. He described the redevelopment as another step towards building a modern and future-ready Indian Railways.
During the inspection, the Minister reviewed passenger amenities and the final preparations for the Prime Minister's visit. Expressing satisfaction with the work, he said the upgraded station will improve the travel experience and reflects Indian Railways' commitment to providing safe, accessible and world-class infrastructure while showcasing Punjab's cultural identity.
