West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday intensified her attack on the BJP, raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and alleging that it is being used to deprive citizens of their rights.

Addressing a rally in Keshiyari, Mamata cited the example of Bihar, claiming that people whose names were removed from voter lists were being denied government benefits. “Those whose votes have been struck off are being told their rations will be stopped and bank accounts frozen. As long as I am here, I will not allow such things to happen,” she said.

The Chief Minister accused the BJP-led Centre of indulging in “politics of vendetta” and undermining the country’s federal structure. She described the developments in Bihar as a reflection of this approach.

Continuing her attack from a rally in Jhargram, Mamata also alleged that in BJP-ruled states, restrictions are imposed on people’s food choices. “No one has the right to interfere in what a person eats or wears. We will not allow that in Bengal,” she asserted.

At another public meeting on Friday, Mamata sharpened her rhetoric, warning voters against the BJP and urging them to support the TMC.

The Chief Minister also raised the issue of the Ghatal Master Plan, alleging that the state government has been forced to bear the financial burden due to a lack of support from the Centre.

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at a rally in Debra, rejected these claims and blamed the TMC government for the delay in implementing the project. He asserted that funds had been sanctioned by the Centre and alleged that misgovernance by the state had stalled progress. Shah further promised that if the BJP comes to power, the project would be completed within a year.

The Ghatal Master Plan is considered a crucial flood-control project that is expected to benefit several blocks across West and East Medinipur districts, potentially providing relief to nearly one million people affected by recurring floods.

With both sides trading sharp accusations, the political battle in West Bengal continues to intensify ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, with issues of governance, welfare, and federal relations taking centre stage.
