A pilgrim from West Bengal was found dead near Gauri Kund in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh. The victim has been identified as Dukhi Ram Sarkar (38), a resident of South Dum Dum. He was last seen on August 7 near the Kinnaur Kailash peak, which is about 4,800 metres high.
When he went missing, an intensive search was launched along the difficult trekking route. A quick reaction team found his body at Gauri Kund on Friday.
The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, which begins from July 15 and lasts till August 30, is a tough high-altitude pilgrimage. This year, three pilgrims have died and over 1,100 stranded people have been rescued by the ITBP and the local police. Only 350 pilgrims are allowed to take part oin the trek each day for safety concerns.
