The body of Sepoy Akshit Sharma, who went missing during a river-crossing training exercise on Monday, was recovered from the Manawar stream in Rajouri district on Tuesday morning following an intensive search operation.
A joint team comprising the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local rescuers located and retrieved the body in the Khour area after sustained efforts.
Army officials said Sepoy Sharma went missing around 12 pm on Monday while participating in the exercise in the general area of Sundarbani. An extensive search was immediately launched, utilising all available Army resources and civil agencies. The NDRF joined the operation later on Monday, deploying specialised divers to scour the water body.
In a post on X, the Army’s White Knight Corps stated, “During a river crossing training exercise conducted in the general area of Sundarbani, Sepoy Akshit Sharma was reported missing at around 12 pm today (Monday). Extensive search operations are underway with all available resources of the Army and civil agencies being employed to locate the soldier.”
Officials confirmed that the exercise was part of routine operational preparedness training in the water body. Despite round-the-clock efforts, the body was recovered only on Tuesday morning. The recovery brought the search operation to an end, with authorities now focusing on necessary formalities and support for the soldier’s family.
