Anonymous bomb threat emails were sent to Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat in Sector 1 and Punjab Municipal Bhawan in Sector 35 on Thursday, triggering an immediate security response. This comes a day after several bomb threats were sent to schools in Chandigarh.
Officials stated that the emails were sent to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) at the Punjab Civil Secretariat and to the Director, Local Government, at Municipal Bhawan, where Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann regularly attends official events in the auditorium.
Soon after the emails were received, teams from the police, fire brigade, and bomb disposal squad rushed to both locations. The premises were cordoned off, and employees and visitors were evacuated as a precaution. A detailed anti-sabotage check and search operation is currently underway at both sites.
According to police officers, all standard security procedures were being followed and no suspicious object had been found so far. The situation is being closely monitored, officers added.
Police sources said one of the emails was sent through Gmail to the Punjab Secretariat and allegedly included a threatening message directed at the Punjab Police chief.
According to Chandigarh Police officials, the threats are being taken seriously. The cyber cell has started a probe to find out the origin of the emails and identify the sender. Efforts are on to determine the source and motive behind the messages.
On Wednesday, nearly 30 schools in Chandigarh received bomb threat emails, leading to large-scale security operations, evacuations, and temporary suspension of classes. After thorough searches throughout the day, police said no suspicious or explosive material was recovered from any of the school premises.
This is not the first time that such incident has been reported in the region. In recent days, similar bomb threat emails were also received targeting the District Courts in Chandigarh and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Those threats were later turned out to be hoaxes after no explosive materials were found during detailed searches. Despite earlier incidents turning out to be false alarms, security agencies remain on high alert as probe continues.
