Installation of boundary pillars along the inter-state border between Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke Kessang district and Assam’s Biswanath district began on Monday, marking a key step in implementing the agreement to resolve the decades-old boundary dispute between the two states.
The exercise is being jointly monitored by officials of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, along with representatives of the Centre from the Survey of India.
The initiative follows a previously signed agreement aimed at amicably settling the long-pending border issue. The commencement of ground-level demarcation is seen as a significant milestone in executing the terms of the accord and bringing clarity to communities residing along the disputed stretches.
State Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge, who represents Pakke Kessang, described the development as “historic”.
He said the process had begun with the participation of officials from both states and the Survey of India, representing the Centre.

Wahge said the exercise followed the landmark memorandum of understanding signed to resolve the dispute and pave the way for lasting peace and cooperation between the neighbouring regions.
He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their leadership in advancing the settlement process.
The signing of the Namsai Declaration in July 2022 laid the foundation for a permanent and peaceful resolution of the inter-state boundary dispute, which had remained unresolved for decades.
The ongoing installation of boundary pillars is expected to reduce tensions, provide administrative clarity and strengthen coordination between the two states along the border.
