Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to visit his deputy, DK Shivakumar, at the latter's residence on December 2, reportedly, for second breakfast meeting, an event viewed by official sources on Monday as an effort to demonstrate unity and signal a truce following months of power tussle within the ruling Congress party in the state.
This planned reciprocal visit follows closely after Shivakumar visited the Chief Minister’s residence for a similar breakfast meeting last week.
Following that initial meeting, which was held as per the directive of the Congress high command, both leaders had publicly asserted that "there won’t be any confusion" regarding the leadership. On the overall leadership issue, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have maintained that they will obey the high command’s instructions.
The development is widely seen as a decisive move by the high command to pause the leadership tussle between the two senior figures. It signals Siddaramaiah's continuation as the Chief Minister for the time being, particularly ahead of the crucial legislature session scheduled to begin on December 8.
“As told by the CM on Saturday, he is scheduled to visit Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast tomorrow,” official sources confirmed.
The internal power struggle had intensified amid speculation about a change in the Chief Minister after the Congress government reached the halfway mark of its five-year term on November 20. The speculation was fuelled by an alleged "power-sharing" agreement involving Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar that was rumoured to have been struck in 2023.
