The BRS has accused the Congress government of betraying Backward Classes (BCs) by failing to provide legal backing for its promised 42 per cent reservation in local body elections. The party is now demanding immediate action ahead of the polls.
Speaking to reporters at Telangana Bhavan, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council S Madhusudhana Chari stated that the Congress was neglecting the legality of the BC reservations, despite having had opportunities to implement them effectively. He noted that while Tamil Nadu has successfully secured its BC quota, the state government had "turned a deaf ear" to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s suggestions in this regard.
Former Minister V Srinivas Goud has sought the reservations be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard them from legal challenges.
"Even before the government issued any orders, some people appeared to have approached the courts. What does the government plan to do if the courts strike down the orders?" asked Goud.
Former Minister and MLA Gangula Kamalakar criticised the government's delay, asking why a Government Order (GO) had not been issued in the last 22 months. He went on to describe the court petitions that have been filed before a GO was issued as a "Congress conspiracy." The BRS leaders also took aim at Rahul Gandhi, criticising his silence on the matter despite repeated appeals.
The BRS leaders collectively warned of serious political consequences if the government failed to act. They vowed to pursue legal and political remedies until the BC reservations are secured.
