Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire on a group of suspected cow smugglers in the Char Kukurmara area of Assam’s Mankachar along the India-Bangladesh border in the early hours of Monday, injuring one person, officials said.
According to official reports, BSF jawans spotted a group attempting to illegally transport cattle from Kukur Mara towards Bangladesh during a routine patrol. Despite repeated warnings to stop, the suspects allegedly tried to flee, forcing the security personnel to open fire as part of standard operating procedures.
One smuggler, identified as Shahar Ali (26), son of Hikmat Ali and a resident of Kukur Mara Part-II village under Mankachar police station, was shot in the leg. He sustained injuries and was taken to Hatsingimari Civil Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The remaining suspects managed to escape under the cover of darkness. During the operation, BSF personnel also recovered two cattle along with smuggling tools, including cutting equipment and nylon ropes.
Following the incident, security in the area has been tightened, and further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the smuggling network.
Officials said the action was part of ongoing anti-smuggling operations along the porous Assam–Bangladesh border.
