The Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday handed over the bodies of two Bangladeshi nationals to the authorities of the neighbouring country after they were killed in a firing incident near the India–Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the zero point under the jurisdiction of Kamalasagar police station, triggering tension in the border region. The deceased were identified as Nabir Hussain (40) and Md Mursalin (22).
According to officials, BSF personnel on routine patrol spotted a group allegedly attempting to smuggle fish fingerlings from the Indian side across the international border. Troops reportedly tried to stop the activity, but the situation escalated when the suspected smugglers allegedly began pelting stones and bricks at security personnel.
Officials stated that the BSF initially issued repeated warnings to disperse the group. However, as tensions intensified, troops reportedly fired a few rounds from pump action guns in self-defence, injuring the two men. They were later shifted to government hospitals, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Sources indicated that the incident took place around 11:15 pm near the Dhajanagar border area, adjoining the Kasba border in Bangladesh, and allegedly within Indian territory.
Meanwhile, reports citing the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) claimed that around 15 Bangladeshi nationals had allegedly crossed into Indian territory with the assistance of Indian associates for smuggling activities. Several others accompanying the group were also reportedly injured during the incident and were taken to Comilla in Bangladesh for treatment.
