The Centre has approved the establishment of Tripura’s first government ayurvedic medical college and hospital at Udaipur in Gomati district, marking a significant step in expanding traditional medicine and medical education in the state.
The approval was granted by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine under the Ministry of AYUSH. The institution, to be known as the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, will admit 60 students from the 2026-27 academic session.
Announcing the development on Friday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the commission had accepted the state's proposal to establish the college and hospital at Udaipur.
“I am delighted to share that the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has accepted our application for the establishment of the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Udaipur with an intake capacity of 60 seats from the academic session 2026–27,” Saha said.

Describing the approval as a landmark achievement, the chief minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting efforts to strengthen healthcare and medical education across the country.
According to Saha, the institution will play a crucial role in promoting Ayurvedic education in Tripura while creating opportunities for students seeking careers in traditional medicine.
The proposed college and hospital are also expected to enhance healthcare delivery in the state and contribute to the wider integration of Ayurveda into the public health system.
Officials said the institution would become the first government-run ayurvedic medical college in Tripura and is expected to emerge as a key centre for education, research and healthcare services related to Ayurveda in the Northeast.
The approval comes amid growing efforts by the Centre and states to promote traditional systems of medicine alongside conventional healthcare and expand educational infrastructure in the sector.
