The Union government has dispatched an inter-ministerial team to review and assess the damage in the flood-affected Jammu region over the next four days. The decision was announced during a meeting co-chaired by Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, head of the inter-ministerial team, and Col. Kirti Pratap Singh, Joint Secretary of the National Disaster Management Authority of India, on Wednesday night.
The meeting was held to discuss the scale of damages caused by recent cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in the Jammu division.
A government spokesperson said on Thursday: “Over the next four days, the inter-ministerial team will conduct detailed on-ground visits to the affected areas to assess the actual scale of losses and damages in the districts of Jammu division. It shall then submit a detailed report to the Government of India.”
The team comprises officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Rural Development, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Ministry of Finance.
During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner informed the Central team about the worst-affected areas and the damage to critical infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and water supply schemes.
The spokesperson said “Discussions were held on damage to roads, power infrastructure, water supply, and the efforts being made to restore the same.”
Meanwhile, both Jammu and Kashmir divisions have been battered by incessant rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods, which have claimed more than 130 lives and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure, including residential structures.
According to recent data made public by the J&K administration, Doda district has witnessed damage to more than 500 residential houses, while billions of rupees in losses have been recorded in Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kulgam, and Anantnag districts.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has recently urged the central government to announce a flood relief package for rain-battered Jammu and Kashmir.
