All schools in Chandigarh will remain shut on September 3 as the city continues to reel under heavy rainfall, officials announced on Tuesday.
Since Sunday, Chandigarh — the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana — has recorded over 140 mm of rain. “In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions in the region, all schools of UT (union territory) Chandigarh shall remain closed on September 3," the statement said.
Schools in the city had already been closed on Tuesday.
The downpour has also swollen the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, flooding vast stretches of Punjab, while seasonal rivulets continue to overflow after heavy rains in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab has declared a closure of all educational institutes till Wednesday.
Neighbouring Haryana, too, has been battered by the rains, with several areas facing waterlogging and disruption.
