The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Tuesday, following MLA Khursheed’s heated response to BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa’s remarks about the Kashmiri people a few days earlier. Khursheed was joined by other MLAs, including Hafeez Lone, National Conference legislators, and several other members, leading to intense exchanges in the House.
Chaos erupted in the well of the House when both sides engaged in heated arguments over Randhawa’s land encroachment allegations. Randhawa had claimed that Kashmiris living in Jammu city were encroaching on land belonging to the Jammu Development Authority (JDA).
Reacting strongly, Khursheed protested in the well of the House, stating that the claims made by the MLA were not accurate. The disorder continued as an MLA waved a placard mocking Randhawa; the placard read “Khasra No. 211”.
Earlier, Randhawa himself had received a showcause notice from the JDA over the alleged encroachment of land under Khasra No. 211 at Chak Ganeshu village in Mandal tehsil of Jammu.
Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo had earlier stated that the UT government reclaimed more than 500 kanals land from encroachers and handed it back to the JDA in 2025. Tuesday’s incident triggered protests and sloganeering by MLAs.
Speaker of the Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather directed all sides to exercise restraint to ensure that important proceedings could continue smoothly. While members promised to follow the Speaker’s directions, disruptions have become routine in the Assembly, especially during the morning sessions.
