The reopening of 14 of the most-visited tourist spots in the Kashmir Valley was announced by the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, following repeated requests from the UT government and tourism stakeholders.

After the Pahalgam terror attack—in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down by terrorists at the picturesque Baisaran meadow—the LG administration had closed 50 tourist destinations as a precautionary measure.

In a post on X, the LG’s office stated, “After a thorough security review and discussions, I have ordered the reopening of more tourist spots in the Kashmir and Jammu divisions, which were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.”

The LG later confirmed that 11 destinations in Kashmir have been reopened, including Yousmarg, Doodhpathri, Dandipora Park in Kokernag, Peer Ki Gali, Dubjan and Padpawan in Shopian; Astanpora, Thajwas Glacier, Hung Park in Ganderbal, and Wullar and Watlab in Baramulla, and the Tulip Garden in Srinagar.

Three other locations in Jammu—Devi Pindi in Reasi, Mahu Mangat in Ramban, and Mughal Maidan in Kishtwar—have also been reopened for tourists. During the recent budget session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged the LG administration to reopen the closed tourist destinations. He reportedly discussed the matter with the Union Home Minister during his three-day visit to the UT.
