The Greater Chennai Corporation council on Friday passed a resolution banning the purchase and rearing of Pitbull and Rottweiler dog breeds within city limits. The order will come into effect from Saturday, December 20.
The resolution was adopted unanimously at a council meeting held at the Ripon Building, chaired by Mayor R. Priya. Under the new rule, a fine of Rs 1 lakh will be imposed on anyone who newly purchases or rears Pitbull or Rottweiler dogs in Chennai.
The move comes amid growing concerns over stray dog attacks in the city. Corporation officials said the decision is part of a broader effort to strengthen measures aimed at preventing dog bite incidents. In recent months, the civic body has stepped up enforcement of regulations for pet owners, including mandatory vaccination and licensing of dogs.
As per the latest resolution, owners of already licensed Pitbull and Rottweiler dogs must ensure that their pets are fitted with a collar and muzzle when taken outdoors. Failure to comply with this requirement will attract a fine of Rs 5,000, the Corporation warned.
The council meeting also reviewed the status of pet licensing in the city. The Corporation had earlier announced December 19 as the deadline for obtaining pet licenses. From December 20, civic officials will begin door-to-door inspections, and owners of unlicensed pets may face fines of up to Rs 5,000.
According to Corporation data, details of 98,523 pets have been registered so far, but licenses have been issued for only 56,378 pets. Officials said enforcement drives would be intensified to ensure compliance with the licensing and safety regulations.
The Corporation reiterated that the measures are aimed at ensuring public safety while promoting responsible pet ownership across Chennai.
