A controversy over an objectionable question in a Class IV English examination paper—where Lord Rama’s name was listed among options for a dog’s name—has led to the suspension of Vijay Kumar Lahre, officer-in-charge of the District Education Office (DEO) in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh.

The action was taken by the Chhattisgarh School Education Department with immediate effect, following multiple allegations, including negligence in official duties, mishandling of examination procedures, and financial irregularities.

The issue first came to light on January 8, 2026, when a news report highlighted the controversial question, triggering outrage for hurting religious sentiments. A subsequent inquiry found that responsibility for preparing and distributing the question paper rested entirely with the DEO’s office, pointing to serious lapses in oversight.

Officials stated that Lahre’s actions constitute a violation under the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965, and proceedings have been initiated under the Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966.

According to Education Department sources, the charges against Lahre include negligence in examination work, inclusion of objectionable content, failure to act promptly in matters related to the High Court, disobedience of departmental directives, and serious irregularities flagged during audits.

During the suspension period, Lahre will receive a subsistence allowance as per rules, and his headquarters have been shifted to the Raipur Divisional Office. Officials indicated that further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing departmental proceedings.

Following his suspension, B L Dewangan has been given an additional charge as the District Education Officer for Mahasamund.
