A four-year-old girl died after falling into a sewage tank of a school in Dhabota, Nalagarh subdivision, Solan, on Thursday afternoon. She was a nursery student at Bhagat Singh Memorial Public School. The girl, identified as Manjot Kaur, was found dead in the sewage tank, one of whose two lids was missing.
As per an FIR registered on the complaint of Jarnail Singh, a local resident, the school peon called him around 12.40 pm and said a small girl’s body was floating in the sewage tank near the toilet.
Jarnail immediately went inside the school and identified the body as that of nursery student Manjot Kaur. The girl’s father, Jitender Singh, and another resident also reached the spot and pulled out the body. They believed the girl had fallen into the tank nearly two hours earlier. The family blamed the school administration for negligence, saying it failed to ensure the safety of children by leaving the sewage tank uncovered.
Shockingly, the school staff remained unaware of the incident for several hours. Police said the tragedy could have gone unnoticed had the peon not spotted the body. A police team reached the school, took custody of the body, and sent it for post-mortem.
A case has been registered under Sections 125 and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for endangering life and causing death by negligence. An investigation is underway, said Additional SP, Baddi, Ashok Verma.
“The sewage tank is located in a corner of the playground and was left uncovered, showing serious negligence by the school authorities,” said SHO, Nalagarh, Rakesh Roy. He added that although the school administration later informed the police about the incident, they had already received information from local residents.
