The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is set to conduct a voice sample test of Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the controversial ‘DJ’ case, after securing permission from the court. The development comes after the TMC MP’s plea for an urgent hearing was rejected by the Calcutta High Court.

According to sources, Banerjee may be required to appear for the voice test on Tuesday. Investigators are planning to carry out the procedure at the Bidhannagar Court.

Last week, a CID team visited Banerjee’s Kalighat residence to serve him a copy of the court order permitting the voice sample test. The notice directed him to appear on June 30. Following this, the Diamond Harbour MP approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking relief against the move.

When the matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Kaushik Chanda, the court had initially agreed to hear the petition. However, the scheduled hearing on June 29 did not take place. Subsequently, Banerjee’s request for an urgent hearing was declined. Another bench, headed by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, is now expected to hear the matter.

The case originates from remarks made by Banerjee during a campaign rally ahead of the last Assembly elections, where he issued a strong warning while targeting political opponents. In the speech, he stated that “the DJ will play” in a manner that critics have described as provocative.

Following the speech, a resident of Baguiati lodged an FIR at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, alleging that the comments were inflammatory and could incite unrest. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, the case was later handed over to the CID for investigation.

Since taking over the probe, CID officials have intensified their investigation. Banerjee has already been summoned to Bhabani Bhaban, the CID headquarters, where he underwent prolonged questioning in connection with the case.

With the voice sample test now imminent, the case is expected to take a crucial turn, even as legal proceedings continue in the High Court.
