The body of a Class 11 student who vanished from her home in Mokalwas village three days ago has been recovered from a pond near the local crematorium, police confirmed on Saturday.
Officers indicated that the incident is being treated as a suspected suicide.
A diary was discovered by police in which the girl had written a note to her parents: "Mom and dad, please forgive me. I am going to my grandfather. Do not look for me. If you must, look near the cremation ground pond." Her body was subsequently located in that location.
At the time of her death, she was dressed in her school uniform.
According to police reports, the girl's father is employed in the court library. She was a student at Maitri School and described by her family as a bright pupil.
On the night of February 11, the girl retired to her room after dinner, telling her family she had to study. When her parents and brother woke the following morning, she was gone. After an unsuccessful search, the family filed a missing complaint.
After analysing the CCTV footage, the police were able to spot the girl leaving her house in her school uniform. A missing person case was registered, and the family had put up a reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information regarding her safe return.
Police searched the girl’s room on Friday and found the diary.
A police team, accompanied by divers, subsequently went to the pond. After pumping water out of the pond, the body was found stuck in the mud.
Following a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family on Saturday. A senior police officer confirmed that an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances that led her to take the extreme step.
