Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday congratulated newly elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on taking the oath of office. Omar said, “It should not have come to this.”
Referring to the delay in the swearing-in, he added, “It took him three to four days and back-to-back visits to Raj Bhavan, but finally the numbers were achieved.”
He also referred to several Supreme Court rulings and precedents, stating that ideally the Governor should have invited the single largest party or pre-poll alliance to prove its majority. “The majority is proved on the floor of the House, not in Raj Bhavan. Anyway, it is better late than never,” he added.
Omar said Vijay has been given a few days to prove his majority. “We hope that he will prove his majority,” he said.
Political drama in Tamil Nadu continued for several days after Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) swept the Assembly elections, taking many by surprise.
TVK defeated the decades-old Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK, by securing 107 seats. However, challenges remain for the new Chief Minister as he takes charge of one of India’s largest and economically prosperous states.
