Jammu and Kashmir PDP leader Iltija Mufti has strongly criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his recent remarks rejecting the imposition of a liquor ban in the Union Territory. She slammed Omar Abdullah for giving what she described as illogical reasons, pointing out that two major states, Gujarat and Bihar, have successfully enforced liquor bans.
In a post on X, Iltija wrote, “The J-K CM’s expected U-turn on refusing to prohibit liquor shops lacks logic. He claims it is wrong to impose a ban on Hindus consuming alcohol since their religion does not forbid it. If this is the case, how have Hindu-majority states like Gujarat and Bihar banned alcohol successfully without a whimper?”
Omar had said on Sunday that liquor shops were meant to serve people of other faiths where alcohol consumption is allowed.
“We are proud of J-K’s secular credentials, but it is deeply unfortunate and insensitive for its chief minister to dismiss the religious sensibilities of the majority with such indifference,” Iltija added.
Criticism of the Omar Abdullah government is also growing, with several political voices questioning the delay in cabinet expansion and pointing to growing discontent within the National Conference cadre.
