Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said he will personally remind his Punjab counterpart to fulfil the commitments made regarding the Shahpur Kandi dam project.

Addressing the Legislative Assembly, Omar Abdullah stated that the 1979 pact signed between the two governments is a sovereign commitment and not an individual one.

“I will take up the issue at my own level with my counterpart from Punjab about the commitments and remind him. It is not an individual commitment but a sovereign commitment between the Government of Punjab and the Government of J&K,” he said. “There is no question of backtracking from the pact. I will remind and convince him to fulfil the agreement,” Omar added.

The Shahpur Kandi dam project, located on the Ravi River in the Pathankot district of Punjab, is a multipurpose project spanning over 11 kilometres of the Ranjit Sagar Dam. It serves as a balancing reservoir to optimise water release for irrigation and power generation.

The project is designed to irrigate approximately 37,173 hectares of land — 32,173 hectares in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and Samba districts and 5,000 hectares in Punjab. It also generates more than 206 MW of electricity from combined operations.

The agreement between the two governments aims at the full utilisation of India’s share of Ravi River waters under the Indus Water Treaty (1960) while restricting additional flow of water to Pakistan.
