Fresh snowfall was witnessed in several parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, leading to a significant fall in temperatures across both states. Rainfall was also recorded in many areas in Himachal, including Shimla city, reflecting a sudden change in weather conditions.
In Himachal Pradesh, the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang received fresh snowfall, which notably lowered temperatures in the surrounding region. Shimla experienced rainfall at locations such as The Ridge and nearby areas, indicating active weather changes across different parts of the state.
Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, higher reaches of the Banihal mountains also witnessed fresh snowfall, further intensifying the prevailing cold conditions in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall, along with isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, are likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph and could gust up to 60 kmph in certain areas.
The IMD added that isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are likely to continue over Jammu and Kashmir on April 9 and 10. Himachal Pradesh is also likely to witness similar weather conditions on April 9. These conditions may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, with wind speeds ranging between 30–40 kmph and gusting up to 50 kmph.
The fresh spell of snowfall in upper reaches and rainfall in lower areas has caused temperatures to drop across both hill states, signalling a seasonal shift in weather patterns. Such weather is common during this period and often affects daily life, particularly in hilly regions where snowfall can disrupt road connectivity and travel.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as weather activity is expected to continue in the coming days. Residents and travellers have been advised to remain alert and take precautions in view of the forecast for rainfall, snowfall and strong winds.
