Cold wave conditions have intensified across Jammu and Kashmir, while fresh snowfall in Leh has led to the suspension of flight operations at the airport on Monday, officials said.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, cold and dry conditions are expected to continue in the region over the next few days, with the least chances of rain or snowfall until January 7.
The ongoing dry weather conditions have increased the hardships of the common people, with intense morning and evening chill.
Most of the weather stations in the Union Territory continue to experience freezing temperatures. The famous tourist spots, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg, received fresh snowfall.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded a further dip in temperature, with the minimum settling at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday night compared to minus 2.8 degrees Celsius recorded the night before.”
“There is little possibility of light rain or snowfall in the plains of the Kashmir Valley until January 7,” it said.
The leading domestic airline, IndiGo, announced on Monday that “its flight operations to and from Leh have been temporarily put on hold due to the fresh snowfall in Leh.”
An advisory from the airline urged customers to check the latest flight status before heading to the airport.
Jammu city remained the warmest place, with minimum temperatures at 8.7 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg emerged as the coldest, with minus 8.8 degrees Celsius recorded.
The Valley’s main tourist attractions, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam, are witnessing a massive rush of tourists following the recent snowfall.
The recent snowfall partially ended a prolonged dry period in Kashmir, affecting several water bodies, though levels showed some increase following the snowfall in late December.
Meanwhile, the Valley is in the middle of the harsh 40-day Chillai-Kalan period. During this period, the Kashmir Valley usually receives heavy snowfall, which replenishes the agricultural land, particularly the horticulture and saffron fields.
